Project Overview

The Critical Slide Society (TCSS) is an established Australian surf lifestyle brand based in Bondi, Sydney. With a flagship store on Bondi Road and global e-commerce presence, they sell boardshorts, t-shirts, shirts, caps, accessories, and collaborative collections. The brand has been featured in publications like Stab Magazine and Oceans Tokyo.

Despite strong brand recognition, their Shopify store was underperforming in organic search — collections weren't ranking, products lacked structured data, and the site had performance issues affecting both SEO and user experience.

My Role

What I owned

I handled the technical SEO audit, Shopify optimization work, content direction, and UX refinements needed to lift both rankings and storefront usability.

Audited the site architecture, crawl issues, and structured-data gaps across the catalog.

Planned and executed collection-page improvements for search intent and internal linking.

Improved performance bottlenecks without breaking the surf-brand aesthetic.

Aligned product, collection, and international SEO signals across the store.

Problem Solving

How I approached the real problems

Step 1

Fixing invisible SEO value in existing products

I added structured data, better metadata, and stronger product content so search engines could understand and feature more of the catalog.

Step 2

Improving collections that looked good but ranked poorly

I rewrote collection-page positioning around search demand and supported it with better internal linking and descriptive copy.

Step 3

Recovering performance lost to heavy media and apps

I cut render-blocking assets, optimized imagery, and reworked loading priorities to improve Core Web Vitals materially.

Challenges Faced

The project required balancing brand aesthetics with technical SEO:

Missing Structured Data: 200+ products had zero schema markup. No Product, BreadcrumbList, or Organization schema. Competitors were dominating rich snippet results in search.

Poor Collection SEO: Collection pages had thin content, no meta descriptions, weak H1 tags, and no internal linking strategy between related collections.

Performance Issues: Heavy video backgrounds and unoptimized images resulted in poor Core Web Vitals scores around 45/100. Multiple render-blocking scripts from third-party apps.

International SEO: The store ships globally to 50+ countries but had no hreflang tags, inconsistent currency handling, and poor geo-targeting signals.

Thin Product Content: Product descriptions were minimal — often just size/color info with no SEO-optimized copy.

My Approach

I executed a comprehensive SEO and design optimization:

Technical SEO Audit: Ran a full crawl with Screaming Frog, identified indexing issues, broken links, redirect chains, and missing meta data across 500+ URLs.

Schema Implementation: Added Product schema (price, availability, ratings), BreadcrumbList, Organization, and CollectionPage schema across the entire store using custom Liquid snippets.

Collection Page Optimization: Wrote unique, keyword-rich descriptions for top 30 collections. Optimized title tags, meta descriptions, and H1 hierarchy. Built internal linking between related collections (e.g., Boardshorts → Trunks → Swimwear).

Performance Sprint: Lazy-loaded all images and videos, deferred non-critical scripts, optimized Shopify theme assets, implemented responsive image srcsets. Improved PageSpeed from 45 to 90.

Product SEO: Rewrote key product descriptions with SEO-optimized copy. Added alt text to all product images. Implemented product review schema integration.

Design Refinements: Optimized the homepage layout for better engagement — improved best sellers section, streamlined navigation, enhanced mobile UX for the product grid.

The SEO and design overhaul delivered measurable results:

Search Performance: 180% increase in organic traffic. 25+ collection pages ranking on page 1 of Google. 150+ products showing rich snippets in search results.

Technical Metrics: PageSpeed improved from 45/100 to 90/100. LCP reduced by 60%. All Core Web Vitals passing green.

Indexing: 200+ products properly indexed with full structured data. Zero crawl errors in Google Search Console.

Global Reach: Proper international SEO implementation with currency handling for 50+ shipping destinations.
