Calming, accessible design focused on user comfort and trust

Project Overview

Proshanti.online is a non-profit mental health platform focused on providing accessible resources, articles, and support for Bengali-speaking communities. As Head of Tech, I was responsible for the entire web presence — from website design to content management to ensuring the site was accessible for all users, including those with disabilities.

Challenges Faced

Sensitive Context: Mental health websites require extreme care in design — calming colors, easy navigation, and accessible content. Any frustrating UX could deter users who are already in a vulnerable state.

Accessibility Requirements: The platform needed WCAG 2.1 AA compliance to ensure users with visual, hearing, motor, and cognitive disabilities could access all content.

Volunteer Team Management: The tech team was made up of volunteers with varying skill levels. I needed to create systems and documentation that anyone could use.

Bilingual Content: The site served both Bengali and English-speaking users, requiring proper language handling and content management.

My Approach

Designed the site with a calming color palette, generous whitespace, and large readable fonts. Used WordPress with a custom Astra child theme optimized for accessibility. Implemented proper heading hierarchy, ARIA labels, keyboard navigation, and high-contrast mode. Built a content calendar system for consistent article publishing. Created editing guides for volunteer writers. Set up accessibility testing as part of the publishing workflow.

Results & Impact

Impact:
- 2,000+ monthly visitors accessing mental health resources
- 50+ articles published on mental health topics
- 95/100 accessibility score (Lighthouse)
- Keyboard navigation working across all pages
- Bilingual support for Bengali and English

Team Achievement:
- Trained 5 volunteer writers on WordPress and accessibility best practices
- Built documentation that allowed smooth team transitions
- Platform continues to operate successfully after my tenure

This project showed me the power of technology for social good.
