Project Overview
A family dental practice in Santa Clara, CA had a beautiful office and experienced dentists — but their website was invisible on Google. They were stuck on page 5+ for "dentist in Santa Clara," getting only 120 organic visits per month from an outdated WordPress site built in 2019 that loaded in 7.8 seconds on mobile.
They needed a complete digital transformation: modern website, local SEO strategy, and a system to consistently attract new patients from Google.
Challenges Faced
The project presented multiple intertwined challenges:
Technical Debt: The existing WordPress site was built on a heavy multi-purpose theme (Avada) with 32 active plugins. Page weight was 4.2MB, LCP was 7.8 seconds, and the site failed all Core Web Vitals.
Zero Local SEO Foundation: Google Business Profile had only 12 reviews, no Google Posts, and inconsistent NAP (Name, Address, Phone) data across 23 different directories. The practice wasn't appearing in the Local Pack for any relevant keywords.
Competitive Market: Santa Clara is a densely populated area with 40+ dental practices competing for the same keywords. Top competitors had 200+ reviews, established domain authority, and years of content.
Content Gap: The old site had a single "Services" page listing all treatments in bullet points — no dedicated service pages, no blog, no FAQ content. Google had nothing substantial to index.
Limited Budget & Timeline: The practice wanted visible results within 3 months, with a fixed budget that required strategic prioritization of high-impact activities.
My Approach
I approached this as a 3-phase project — Foundation, Optimization, and Growth:
Phase 1 — WordPress Redesign (Weeks 1-3):
Designed a completely new site using Astra theme + Elementor Pro. Custom layouts for every service page (dental implants, invisalign, emergency, cosmetic, whitening, crowns). Real staff photos replaced stock images. Click-to-call buttons on every page. Online appointment booking form above the fold. Converted 200+ images to WebP, implemented lazy loading, and inlined critical CSS. Page weight went from 4.2MB to 890KB.
Phase 2 — Local SEO Foundation (Weeks 2-5):
Complete Google Business Profile overhaul — every field optimized, 40+ photos uploaded, weekly Google Posts, 25 pre-populated Q&As. Built an automated review request system (email + SMS after appointments) that grew reviews from 12 to 67 in 90 days. Audited and corrected 23 inconsistent NAP listings using BrightLocal, then built new citations on 80+ authoritative directories including Yelp, Healthgrades, Zocdoc, Apple Maps, and dental-specific directories.
Phase 3 — Content & On-Page SEO (Weeks 3-12):
Created 6 dedicated service pages (1,200-2,200 words each) with FAQ schema, before/after galleries, and strong CTAs. Published 2 blog posts per week targeting long-tail local keywords. Implemented comprehensive schema markup — LocalBusiness, Dentist, FAQPage, BreadcrumbList, and Article. Every page got optimized title tags, meta descriptions, and proper H1-H6 hierarchy.
Internal linking architecture connected service pages, blog posts, and the homepage into a cohesive topical cluster around "Santa Clara dental care."
Results & Impact
The results exceeded expectations at every milestone:
